I ONLY show outside of my country. I don’t like the
way shows are going where I live; I don’t like that
there are people who can decide who can close a
title and who never will close a title. I don’t like poor
judging.
I would like to have one of my dogs win a WDS.
Do you have any advice for our readers who would
like to become successful breeders?
Work, work, work. And don’t pretend to buy
the perfect promising-show puppy to start your
breeding. We all started with low- to mediocre-
quality subjects, and we did it. There’s much more
to learn from low quality and there’s much more to
do. More fun, more satisfaction. I bought a number
of puppies from abroad; some developed well; some
not. I never complained with the breeders; I never
asked for another puppy or my money back; I just
kept working.
Do you judge? If yes, what do you look for when
you are judging? If you don’t judge, would you like
to in the future? When exhibiting what do you look
for in a good judge?
I’m not judging, but I would like to. No time for it
though. I think is not reconcilable-- being a judge
and being a good breeder. Maybe when I give up
with breeding, I could consider becoming a judge.
When showing I look for a judge that has a keen eye
and uses it on the dogs.
Is there anything you would like to add?
Breeding Russells has been the greatest adventure
of my life after my family and my home. I started
from zero; I didn’t have a background in canine
conformation; I didn’t have knowledge in breeding/
husbandry. I must say that my medical studies
(PhD) helped me a lot to breed scientifically. I was
already familiar with genetics, growth, proportions,
and aesthetics--each helped me so much to improve
in breeding. A natural talent for geometry due to a
particularly sensitive eye to proportions and shapes
surely was a good skill to have. Photography also
helped me to develop a good eye.
Showing Russells worldwide allowed me to meet so
many people and create long lasting friendships. I
will always be grateful for that.
