The Canaan Dog is the only national dog of Israel.
This quick, medium-sized pasture dog is docile
with family, aloof with strangers. The ever-alert
Canaan is a vocal and persistent guardian of flock
and home. Canaan Dogs are lean, bushy-tailed
dogs; standing 48 to 60cm at the shoulder. Erect,
expressive ears and dark almond eyes, convey
            an inquisitive expression. Canaans
move at a brisk, natural trot.
            They are rugged, agile, and
            apparently tireless, making
them a nice fit for hikers
            and runners. Canaans are
            clever, confident, and
            territorial. They will
            end up "owning"

            these ancient wonder-dogs train
            beautifully. Agility, obedience, herding

Tel Aviv has estimated that it is home to 30,000
dogs, and 413,000 people. Ahead of its dog
festival, called Kelaviv, Tel Aviv declared itself
the friendliest City in the world for dogs, with the
greatest number of dogs per capita. New York
City put the number of dogs in the Big Apple at
600,000, with a population of 8.6 million humans,
yielding a ratio just a fraction of a percent lower regulations. Dog adoption rates rose by 300%
than Tel Aviv’s — but who’s counting? Dogs are during the COVID-19 pandemic, but as people
allowed in most cafés, stores and even high-end return to work and as international travel opens
restaurants, as well as on city buses and trains up again, some have started to return to shelters.
