A Brief History of the American
                          Shetland

INFORMATIVE Pony in the United States

            Prior to 1885, Shetland
            ponies originated from the
            Shetland Isles in Great
            Britain. They reflect the
            “old fashioned” look of the
            day – shorter legs, long

            back, short neck, heavy
            bones and overall bulky or
            coarse appearance.

                                                    Example of British Shetland

Eli Elliott is credited with importing seventy- neck, and high action that lends itself to
five ponies to the United States, while a few driving in cart. Presently, an owner can register
years later in 1888, the American Shetland them into four divisions – foundation, classic,
Pony Club was formed. Originally crossbred modern, and modern pleasure. Foundation
with other breeds, such as Arabian, Hackney, ponies are closer to the original Shetlands,
and Welsh, the Shetland Ponies have evolved while the modern ponies comprise taller,
into the show horses of today – ones that presumably more refined versions of their
possess finer bones, sloping shoulder, longer smaller counterparts.
