Shetland
INFORMATIVE Pony in the United States
Prior to 1885, Shetland
ponies originated from the
Shetland Isles in Great
Britain. They reflect the
“old fashioned” look of the
day – shorter legs, long
back, short neck, heavy
bones and overall bulky or
coarse appearance.

Eli Elliott is credited with importing seventy- neck, and high action that lends itself to
five ponies to the United States, while a few driving in cart. Presently, an owner can register
